Hymns and music of yesteryear...

“Battle Hymn of the Republic (Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Lord)”

I came across a very interesting web site about the background of some of the famous hymns we are familiar with... well, some of us are familiar with. Unfortunately not many churches sing those beautiful hymns anymore, and many of them have become unknown to a lot of today's younger generations. However for those of us who are interested I want to share this with you...

This particular song was a favorite classic hymn with roots in the American civil war. I've always thought of it as a political song that might stir up some negative feelings among some people. I have thought about using it a few times in some of my radio show church messages, but because of what is going on today, particularly in America, I held back.

However I never thought of this song as meaning something else, something even deeper than the message of abolitionism that it has represented to be for so many early years --although the movement was absolutely one of positive outcome in the ending of slavery. Nevertheless, over time, the song somehow did lose it's social status and symbolism.

But, here today, I have learned something much higher than I had ever heard concerning this beautiful hymn, from a web site operated by a singer/musician, Luke Powell, who has made singing and music a big part of his pastoral ministry.

So here's Luke Powell's video that I share with you today, which presents that beautiful hymn “Battle Hymn of the Republic (Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Lord)”, in a totally different meaning then what we've heard before – the history, the lyrics and the performance...

P.S.: I don't know if we have an equivalent historical hymn story to this here in Canada... I'm not aware of any, but if you do, let me know through my contact form.

What happened last Tuesday night in Israel?
Excerpt from Behold Israel Weekly Newsletter
with Amir Tsarfati

I was reading the current issue of "Behold Israel Weekly Newsletter by Amir Tsarfati", founder of Behold Israel Connect, which I received today. I was really impressed with the reporting of Amir from his own personal experience right there in the land of Israel. I really wanted to share with you an excerpt of the newsletter that has to do directly with what took place in that historic night... and as it pertains to end times events...

From Harbinger's Daily World News: "...Most people don’t get the magnitude of what we witnessed Tuesday night. One of my news sources, Hillel Fuld, expressed it perfectly. He wrote, “What we witnessed last night was the equivalent of God splitting the sea right before our eyes.” That is not an exaggeration, despite the attempts of the media to downplay what occurred..."

We sure see a lot of new things taking place in these last days that we never heard or seen before... lots going on with government changes and happenings, elections around the world done totally differently from generations before, etc., ... I guess there are a lot of people "turning in their graves" as the saying goes.

But just recently I was thinking about that "novel" expression coined just a few weeks ago -- I'm sure most of you remember well -- "fight, fight, fight"...

We hear it quoted a lot by individuals and groups alike, and then some have added to it that it does not mean to fight physically but with our minds...

So I came up with sort of an amalgamation of everybody's thoughts and put it into a little ode if you will:

Fight for Freedom

We fight on our knees,

our hands lifted up,

and communicate with

free speech and open debate...

For the Battle Belongs to God!

Is it girls and guys, or worse: girls and men???

So many people have a problem pairing the proper way to reference counterpart gender of male/female persons.

I heard the host of a popular international television program do that again this morning -- hence the reason for writing this noted bit...

For example, when talking about men, they will say girls -- with an hesitant pause -- for the female counterpart.

Or they'll call out a group of women "guys" and not, as it should be, "gals".

Would anyone call out a group of males "Hey Gals?"

So what is the problem... I can't understand this... it's not that hard to know how to pair the two gender nouns:

-- if you speak of a man, then the equivalent in the other gender is "a woman"
(not a man and a girl)

-- if you speak of a boy, then the equivalent in the other gender is "a girl"

-- if you speak of a gentleman, then the equivalent in the other gender is "a lady"
(you don't say a gentleman and a woman)

Simple:

man translates into "woman" for the other gender

boy translates into "girl"...

gentleman translates into "lady"...

guy translates into gal...

Description:

Girl = "a common noun for a young female human, usually a child or adolescent. A child whose gender identity is female. A female child from birth to adulthood, a ten-year-old girl."

Boy = "a common noun for a young man human, usually a child or adolescent. A child whose gender identity is male. A male child from birth to adulthood, a ten-year-old boy."

Woman = an adult female human being...

Man = an adult male human being...

gal = informal common noun referring to a girl or a woman..

guy = informal common noun referring to a boy or a man..

I recently heard someone refer to one of the divisions among believers being the issue of “predestination”. My immediate thought was, yes, we are ALL predestined for Redemption. God made the way for us to be saved from the sinful nature inherited by the first parent. But we need to receive it individually through the unselfish works of Jesus Christ.
