Narrative 1
Alright so let's move on with the reading of our Lord's famous Sermon on the Mount that took place very early in His public ministry throughout Galilee...
So last week, we ended on the subject of “Do Not Judge”, from chapter 7 and verses 1 to 5 and ran out of time before the last verse under this heading...
And this is where we will pick up today, at verse 6, which is still in that same context of not judging unrighteously ...
Let's just review the summary of this matter, as we read in “The Liberty Bible Commentary” last week:
“Do not judge refers to an unfavorable and condemnatory judgment. This does not mean that a Christian should never render judgment of any kind under any circumstances.
The New Testament scriptures are filled with exhortations to 'mark those who cause divisions among you', 'receive not those who deny Christ', 'exhort, rebuke, etc.'
Certainly judging ourselves and those who have failed in their spiritual responsibility is a necessity of church discipline, (See 1 Corinthians 5 for example).”
And of course you will remember that chapter 5 speaks of immoral in the church which must be judged.
The point being made here is that we are not to judge the inner motives of another.
John 7:24 says:
“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
Proverbs 31:9 says:
“Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
There are many scriptures that tell us we are to discern between good and evil. In order to discern, we need to judge.
And so let's pick up today, at verse 6, which concludes this particular segment of how to judge....
So Jesus then says;
6)_Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
The word “holy” here is the Greek word hagios (ha-gee-os) (G40) which speaks of holy things – same word as referred to in the gospel for the Holy Spirit, the Holy City, holy place, holy angels, it speaks of pure, moral, religious, Godly things...
So here Jesus is saying that we are not to give the holy truth of the Gospel to those who have refused it already. The idea is not that we should not present the message of the Gospel to sinners and outcasts of society. No Jesus Himself was sent to such on the earth.
But what He is saying is that it is futile to continue to present the truth of the message of the Gospel to those who have already refused what they have heard. Dogs and swines in the time of Jesus particularly were considered unclean animals.
Remember just before this verse, in verse 5 Jesus called out the “hypocrites” ... He knew some of the people in the crowd were not receiving the truth of the Gospel... He told them to first take out the “log” out of their own eye, then they could see clearly to take out the “sliver” out of the brother's eye...
Narrative # 2
Alright, let's get back to the next segment of the Sermon on the Mount,
verses 7 to 11 of chapter 7:
7)_ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8)_For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9)_Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10)_Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11)_If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
This is self-explanatory. A comparison is made here of the nature of a human father who is willing to give his children what they ask, to the pure goodness of God... how much more our heavenly Father is willing to give to His children... you and me...
Jesus' point is that when it seems we are not getting answers from our prayers, we need to be persistent, we need to continue to ask, seek and knock. Sometimes our timing is not the same as the Father's. So we need to be persistent because it is God's good pleasure to give to His children.
And of course it has to be within His will as well.
And verse 12...
Now, in spite of the particle “therefore” that normally would connect previous verses to a next verse or matter, it seems here to throw somewhat of a conundrum as to whether or not verse 12 belongs to the same segment above it of persistent prayer toward our Father in heaven.
I have not come across a commentary that would clarify that one way or another.
However, most people already know that this verse has been given the universal ethical tenet of “the Golden rule”, to suggest or command people to do good to others...
12)_Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Again, In my Complete Jewish Study Bible, there is an illuminating comment from the Jewish perspective...
It says that this verse refers to teachings from the early Jewish writings of the Torah and the Prophets, to “love thy neighbour as thyself”, (Leviticus 19:18).
This is also reiterated in the scripture passage of 1st Corinthians 13, vs 1 to 13, -- The Way of Love chapter, and in Mark 12:28-31, on The Great Commandment which Jesus communicated to one of the scribes who came to him and asked, “Which is the first commandment of all?”
To which the Lord gave the famous answer:
“... The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
“And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (vs 29-31).
Wow, what a conversation between the Lord and the scribe right here!
Next, we get to verses 13 and 14,
still in the 7th chapter of the Sermon on the Mount.
13)_Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14)_Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Again self-explanatory... very straight forward – even from the Old King James Bible.
I always find this passage of scripture very sad...
Again, very clear words but how critical...it is interesting that the Gospel is all about the way, the truth and the life that leads to eternal life...
and Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”
And the gate by which we must enter is “faith”... faith in Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life.

Narrative #3
Alright let's move on now to verses 15 to 23 which is about a warning against False Prophets.
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of (from) thorns, or figs of (from) thistles?
17 Even so (likewise) every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn (cut ) down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them or therefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day (meaning the Day of judgment), Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (or you workers of lawlessness).
Again, so clear as to what Jesus is saying...
but I like what the Liberty Bible Commentary says of this passage...
1)_It says that not everyone professing Christ is genuinely saved. Even the verbal acknowledgment of His lordship is in itself not enough to save the unbeliever apart from true repentance and faith.
2)_A genuinely saved person is one who continually does the will of the Father... in other word his or her normal course of life is to live in obedience to the word and will of God.
3)_Many in the day of judgment will say Lord, Lord but yet they will be lost because their knowledge of the Lord will be based on their good works to attain salvation.
4)_But the response from the Saviour then who is now the Judge will be, “Depart from me, I never knew you..
Now the question is, why is it going to be like that for them in the end of the judgment? Because they came through the gate that led to destruction.
Wow! Very sad... because God has given and continues to clearly proclaim the strong message of Salvation for the last 2000 years, which is attained through His only begotten Son.
Now, Let's move on to verses 24 to 27, the last verses from chapter 7,
reported by Matthew...
And in my King James bible, it is headed: “The two foundations”
So Jesus ends with these words:
v. 24 “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
Wow... what is there not to understand? Again the message is so clear.
Jesus here reminds the listeners, the readers, that hearing alone does not change one's life. One must hear and do what the Master is saying throughout His Gospel...
The illustration of the two foundations are the one man who builds his house on the rock and the one who builds his on the sand. When the storms of life will come, the one on the rock (Jesus' sayings) will stand, and the one on the sand (the fluidity of life) will fall.
And finally, the closing of Matthew chapter 7 of the Sermon on the Mount according to the writings of Matthew:
And I just love these verses – what they say about our Lord Jesus:
28 “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 “For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
The Liberty Bible Commtary says of v. 28:
“He (Jesus) is the personal embodiment of all of His teachings. Thus when He had finished the discourse, the people were astonished.”
And of verse 29 it says:
“The outstanding feature of His teaching was His authority, meaning the divine approval and authoritative constraint with which He delivered His message.”
Just imagine what this did to the Scribes and the Pharisees of the day who had to rely on tradition for their teachings... whereas Jesus spoke as if He personally knew what He was teaching.
Then the readers are asked: “Why should we practice this sermon?
We do because “beyond its moral, ethical and spiritual teachings is the person of the Preacher Himself !
“Without an ostentatious (or flashy) parade, our Lord calls attention to Himself as the focal point of the entire message.
“This is no mere restatement of the Law, but is the highest expression of the quality of Christian living which Christ alone can produce.
“The gospel is the message of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Its amazing 'good news' is that He can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He can change a sinner into a saint!”
Again very profound words from the Liberty Bible Commentary.
Wow again, Awsome.
The Word of God is awsome – both the written word and the Living Word!

Narrative #4
So in the last couple of programs, we covered the Sermon on the Mount from the book of Matthew that so many people are familiar with...
however, interestingly Dr. Luke also covered parts of this famous sermon in his gospel which not so many people know about...
and we will now look at that in our next segment of the study of the gospel by chronological events... without which we would not see this so clearly as we do now in this manner of studying the gospels... that is by events rather than just by the order they appear in our bibles.
So let' get started on the summary of Dr. Luke on the Sermon on the Mount and see how far we'll be able to get in this program today...
Let's go to Luke's record of the Sermon on the Mount,
from chapter 6, verses 20 to 23:
20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
And verses 24 to 26:
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
And Verses 27 to 32:
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
Verses 33 to 35:
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
Wow this one is not very popular is it... but God knows our doings...
Verses 36 to 38
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
And of course nothing here needs clarification – it is so clear.
And it looks like we're going to have to leave it here for now and pick up again next week because we're out of time!
And so we will finish Luke's record of the Sermon on the Mount then...
Wow the Word of God is indeed as we saw last week a light unto my feet and a lamp unto my path... what would we do without the Word of God to teach us and lead us not only through life, but to life eternal...
and as Jesus says in this great Sermon on the Mount, not everyone professing Christ is genuinely saved. Even the verbal acknowledgment of His lordship is in itself not enough to save the unbeliever apart from true repentance and faith.

Closing Narrative…
Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...
...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...
... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...
...but right now, the question is:
...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...
...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross... I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
