Opening Narrative

Hello and welcome to another exciting radio program today on end times and prophecies and scriptures to live by... which is all about old-time gospel and worship music, praying for needs and preaching the Word of God....

And remember this radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched is broadcast every Sunday at 7 am and 7 pm pacific time... and if you unfortunately miss it for whatever reason at any time, you can hear the program any time after that for 4 weeks...at my web site TimingRevelation.com

So, we continue today in the new series started a few weeks ago, based on my book “The Horizontal Chronology of the Four Gospels”...

And I did mention to you before that with this series begins the start of the 8th year of these radio programs Virtual Church for the Spiritual Unchurched.

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these events taking place in the gospels.

So, we continue today in the new series started a few weeks ago, based on my book “The Horizontal Chronology of the Four Gospels”...

As you already know In this series we look at the four gospels in a new light as they are presented by chronological events taking place within the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are presented separately in the Bible ...

It is all the same gospel.... but in chronological order of main events taking place, which lets us hear or see side by side who reported and what each said on these main events taking place in the gospels.

So as you will recall if you were with us in the last few weeks, there are 9 particular events that we are looking at – if you miss any program at any time, remember, they are replayed on my web site TimingRevelation.com for up to four weeks.

The 9 events we're looking at in this series are:

#1--Pre-human existence of Christ
#2--Pre-natal to Jesus's Incarnation
#3--Birth and Childhood of Christ
#4--Beginning of Jesus' ministry...
#5--Galilean ministry of Jesus,

which is where we are right now, as we continue in the Galilean ministry of Jesus.

Future events yet to come:
#6-- Judean and Perean ministry of Jesus
#7-- Jesus' last week
#8-- Jesus' last 6 hours
#9-- From the Resurrection to the Ascension

So we will pick up from here right after this opening music, prayer and worship...

Prayer
Praise God Doxology
Worship music

Narrative 1

So picking up today from where we left off last week, again, in the last couple of weeks we covered the sermon on the mount from the book of Matthew, Mark and Luke... which took us out of the sermon on the mount to the preaching tour of Jesus throughout Galilee... and all the way up to His city of Capernaum, where we saw the healings of the man with leprosy and the paralytic who was led down through the roof of the crowded house...

So let's move on now to when Matthew first began to follow Jesus... which is found in Matthew 9 and verses 9 to 13:

9 “And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom (at the collection booth): and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he (the man, Matthew) arose, and followed him.

10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

(And we will find out in the next text on this story that the house referred to here is Matthew's.)

11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

So He is referring to something in the Old Testament that the Jews are familiar with.

So here Jesus is speaking to the religious priests and lawyers who know the scripture and call themselves righteous... but he says that having compassion and mercy on the lost is better... and for that reason He came to call not the righteous but the sinners to repentance.

(I like what the Liberty Commentary Bible says about this, that those who are sick realize their need of a physician, while the Pharisees, who were also in need, refused to acknowledge it.)

And then as per the chronological events taking place we find that Mark also covered this story in

Mark 2:13-17 --

13 “And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. (Levi is the Aramaic name for Matthew).

15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, (here is that scripture that tells us that the house referred to is Matthew's), many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

And then, again under our study of chronological events taking place, we find that Luke also covered this story. So let's read that:

Luke 5:27 to 32

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. (So, both Mark and Luke use the Aramaic name Levi, and Matthew, in his gospel recording uses Matthew.)

28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house (and we see again that the house they stopped at was Matthew's): and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

So all of this took place in Capernaum, right after the discourse on the Sermon on the Mount. We're still early in Jesus' ministry around A.D. 27/28...

Next we will continue within this story here when Matthew began to follow Jesus, and will look at the questions from the Pharisees concerning fasting -- very interesting encounter...

We'll look at that right after this:

Narrative # 2

So, again we're still in the same story when Matthew first began to follow Jesus, taking place in Capernaum...

So let's pick that up in
Matthew 9:14-17,

14 “Then came to him the disciples of John (speaking of John the Baptist), saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

So, here “the children of the bridechamber” refers to the wedding guests. As long as the guests are there with the bridegroom, the festivities will be enjoyed, until the bridegroom is taken away from them.

16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in, to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

Then the reference to the old and new wineskins refers to traditional Judaism and faith in the Messiah. As it is presented in the Complete Jewish Study bible, “Judaism was not replaced by a new model of religious observance, but instead is reconditioned with the Jewish Messiah at its center.”

Then we have this story also covered by

Mark, chapter 2, verses 18 to 22

18 “And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent (or the tear) is made worse.

22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

As we can see, the illustration and explanation is the same as that of Matthew above.

Then we also have Luke who covered this teaching:

Luke chapter 5:33-39

33 “And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

And this is interesting because He is referring to His taking away when He leaves His visit to earth....

verse 36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

And of course He's talking about the Old Testament and the New Testament and this is fascinating to see this illustration....

verse 39. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

So again we see the same application of the teaching, except that we find something further in verse 39... whereas we saw earlier in the recording of Matthew on this subject that “Judaism was not replaced by a new model of religious observance, but instead is reconditioned with the Jewish Messiah at its center.”

Here Dr Luke adds an additional thought about Judaism, and that is that having drunk the old wine, man needs some time to get used to the new.

Wow, fascinating!

Narrative #3

Then we follow the chronological events of Jesus' ministry from Capernaum here to Jerusalem, for Jesus' 2nd Passover.

The first Passover we read about back during the first week of Jesus' ministry throughout Galilee in about Spring 27.

Now we are a year later, around Spring of 28 for His 2nd Passover in Jerusalem, and pick up from the healing of a nobleman's son that we read about in the book of John at chapter 4.

So, continuing on from there we find Jesus in Jerusalem on His 2nd Passover event.

Let's read that about the lame man healed on the Sabbath:

in John 5:1-47

1 “After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

Now according to some commentaries this day right here may or may not have been exactly at Passover, because there is a missing of the Greek definite article, thus it could have been the feast of Tabernacles, some scholars say. And in the Jewish Complete Study Bible, it actually reads “there was a Judean festival”. Whatever it was, it was during the season of the Passover.

There are similar side note accounts for the location of the pool. However the common location reference reads “near the Sheep Gate” or “by the Sheep Gate”, and description of the pool is “one with five porches.”

Verse 3, “In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

Verse 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

Verse 5, “And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

Again here we see the reaction of the legalistic Jewish rulers come against this healing from Jesus and immediately speak to the man about his unlawful carrying of his bed on a Sabbath, and walking. In their total absorption of their legalistic rules, they did not see the miraculous healing that had taken place and that was an attestation of the glory and power of God.

Verse 11, “He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

So in other words Jesus had walked away and couldn't point to Him....

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

The New King James puts it more accurately this way:

“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working”. Wow Jesus always knew what to respond to these vindictive rulers.

Verse 18, “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

Boy, they were really troubled!

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

I mean, that is a very clear identification of who He is...

verse 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

Wow!

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

Well there is a lot being said by the Lord unto the legalistic rulers here... but every verse is self-explanatory and clear, telling exactly who He is.

And then Jesus continues at verse 24:

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

And a big Amen right here!

Closing Narrative…

Oh how wonderful to appreciate what Jesus has done in our lives to save us from sin by Grace... and how He continues to keep us by His on-going and unlimited Grace...

...that wonderful Grace that comes into our life the moment that we receive Him as for who He is -- the Saviour of mankind and of every individual like you and me personally...

... and this Jesus the Son of God who came to give His life for you and me is the same Jesus who's life we've been reading about in these series of programs right now, and who's death on the cross we will see as we go through the gospel story to where He gave Himself as the sacrificial Lamb of God that took the sin of the world...

...but right now, the question is:

...do you know this Jesus that we're talking about? If you don't know the Lord...

...Just say this prayer, “Lord come into my heart, come into my life, I turn to you right now and ask for forgiveness, I repent of my sins and receive your work on the cross...  I receive your gospel as it was delivered through your blood shed on the cross in my place, and I thank you, Amen...
